And we are getting a submarine named after our state.

The thing that annoys me about the submarine is actually its class name. It’s a Virginia- class sub, but we’ve already had two previous Virginia-classes:
Virginia-class battleship:
Virginia-class cruiser :
I know they are based in Virginia, but someone let the Navy know there are other states they can name things after!
In fairness, they did want to build a Montana-class battleship in WWII but then quickly realized battleships were obsolete:
In any even have the a rmored c ruiser Montana (Tennessee -class), the only other Montana ever finished for the Navy (there was another battleship started in 1920, but scrapped before completion due to the tonnage limits set forth in the Washington Naval Treaty) :

Probably 20 years ago I recall the Coast Guard boarding a drug- running vessel that claimed its home port was Indianapolis. We got a few chuckles out of that news.
(Besides being far , far from any ocean, Indianapolis was fairly rare in early America in being planned and built to be a major city without any navigable river.)
On the flip side we did give our name to a vessel doomed to be a case study in how not to handle the closing days of a world war, so there’s that.

Well, I mean, there’s a bunch of ocean-going ships home ported out of Basel, Switzerland. Maybe they thought it could work like that?

Ha - not quite that secret, but not well known either. He was NW of Idaho Falls a ways. Think it’s closed now - nuclear power training.

Fun fact, what was going to be the
USS Kentucky
, the first of the Montana-class battleships that were canceled when WWII ended, already had a keel laid and a complete hull finished, so years
later when the
USS Wisconsin
, an Iowa-class battleship, accidentally rammed the
USS Eaton
, they brought
Wisconsin
in for repairs and decided the cheapest and most expedient repair would be to lop off the front of the stillborn
Kentucky
, and graft it onto the front of Wisconsin. That’s why a lot of folks refer to the Wisconsin today as the WisKy.

The maritime hub that is Albuquerque had one named for us. We did an exhibit on it at work last year.
